The Mopar Express Lane Crew helmed by team owner Don Schumacher warmed up the Funny Car, which features a special 50th anniversary tribute to the legendary 426 Race HEMI® engine for this weekend’s national event, in front of fans in the early morning hours with the sounds of the 10,000 horsepower HEMI-powered Dodge Charger R/T echoing off the picturesque rocks surrounding the amphitheater plaza at Red Rocks. The 35th edition of Mopar’s signature event will be held at the Bandimere’s family quarter-mile Thunder Mountain drag strip at 5800 feet above sea level on July 18-20.

1429-00107
“We wanted to find a fun way to start the weekend off with some HEMI thunder of our own,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand, who was in attendance for the warm-up. “After celebrating 25 years of title sponsorship of this fantastic event in 2013, this year our focus is on commemorating the 50th anniversary of the iconic 426 Race HEMI. The legendary engine is still such a vital part of Mopar’s heritage and a key ingredient in the success we’ve had at Bandimere Speedway over these years. We’re very proud to be able to continue and add to that that legacy thanks to the hard work of our Mopar teams in Pro Stock and Funny Car classes.”

“We’re proud of the success the legendary HEMI engine continues to have on race tracks as that is what persistently reinforces the quality of the Mopar brand, not just making it synonymous with the sought after muscle car but also with quality service and parts,” Gorlier said. “We are especially proud to invite the father of the HEMI, Tom Hoover, to join us in that celebration as Grand Marshall of the Mopar Mile High Nationals.”

1429-00007
Widely regarded as the “Father of the 426 HEMI,” Tom Hoover spearheaded a performance revolution during his decades of service with Chrysler Corporation, playing an instrumental role in the creation of early racing programs, iconic engines and products that still fuel the Mopar and Dodge brands to this day.

In addition to his work on the 426 HEMI “elephant” engine — so nicknamed for its size, strength and power — Hoover also was instrumental in the development of early Funny Cars, small block engine NHRA Pro Stock cars and a long list of additional performance parts. Hoover was also a founding member of the Ramchargers race team, the legendary group of drag racers/Chrysler Corporation employees whose passion for quarter-mile competition helped launch the company’s motorsports program during the dawn of the performance era.

To complete the countdown to this weekend’s national event will be the 13th edition of the popular Mopar Block Party festivities held on Thursday, July 17th, from 6 to 10 p.m. (MT) between 11th and 13th street in downtown Golden, Colo. where fans are invited to take part in a large variety of free activities.

They include an All-Mopar driver autograph session featuring five-time and defending title winner, Allen Johnson, five-time and reigning NHRA Pro Stock World Champion, Jeg Coughlin Jr., and runner-up the last two years at Bandimere Speedway, V. Gaines. Also joining the factory Mopar Hot Rod drivers will be 2011 Funny Car Champion Matt Hagan and 2012 Champ Jack Beckman, teammate Tommy Johnson Jr., as well as DSR Top Fuel drivers Tony Schumacher and Spencer Massey.

1429-00160a
On display will be Mopar’s NHRA race cars, classic cars and special display vehicles, as well as Mopar product demonstrations. The evening will be hosted by local radio personality Willie B. of KBPI 106.7 FM and highlights will also include a live concert with local Golden vendors offering food and drink for purchase. Also broadcasting live from the street party will be Kurt Hansen’s “Race Central Radio on Yahoo Sports, ESPN Sports Radio And KFNX AM 100 Phoenix presented By Office Liquidators, Tuff Shed and Bandimere Speedway”.

As Mopar teams prepare to hit the track at scenic Rocky Mountain drag strip there is plenty of anticipation for the event that serves as the opener of the NHRA western swing, which includes stops in Sonoma, California, and Seattle, Washington. Last year, the Roy Johnson tuned Pro Stock HEMI engines swept the western swing and are hoping to repeat the feat starting with a win at the Mopar Mile High Nationals

The odds favour Allen Johnson who has been the king of Thunder Mountain earning five wins (2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2007), four No. 1 Qualifier award, seven straight final round appearances and has posted nine out of the ten fastest passes at this track. He and Mopar teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr, along with HEMI-powered hometown favorite, V. Gaines, will be taking their new Dodge Dart hot rods down the track for the first time since their debut earlier this season.

In Funny Car, Hagan would like to take his HEMI 50th anniversary Mopar to the winners circle for this first time while Beckman would like to add a victory to the two titles earned in 2012 and 2007 and three final round appearances in the past seven years. Tommy Johnson Jr. has seen victory circle at Bandimere Speedway in other classes but will work to take his Funny Car Dodge Charger R/T there this weekend while Ron Capps, who stands third in the Funny Car points, would love to use a win in Denver to propel him further up the standings.

ESPN2 will provide coverage of the Mopar Mile High NHRA Nationals with two hours of qualifying highlights on Saturday, July 19 starting at 11 p.m. (ET).  Three and a half hours of elimination round coverage will air on Sunday, July 20, starting at 2:30 p.m. (ET).

ChargerSRT8.g06.KGPThis new Charger SRT is almost certainly getting the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 that was just unveiled in the top-tier Challenger SRT–judging from the rumor mill and from Fiat Chrysler’s very own image laying out the company’s five-year model plan.  The graphic shows the same engine specs for the upcoming Charger SRT (caught testing here) as the Challenger SRT, both referencing “RWD S/C V8”.  We can’t say for sure if this particular prototype was running the Hellcat engine, or the standard HEMI 392 engine, but the spy photographers said it certainly looked and sounded formidable as it hustled back to the safety of its engineering lab.

2014 Dodge Challenger R/T with Scat Package 3Dodge owners who want to upgrade their vehicles with new Scat Pack performance stage kits, first unveiled by Dodge and Mopar last November at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, can do so with confidence that the vehicle warranty will remain unaffected.

In an industry-first for such high-level performance modifications offered by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), the factory warranty will be maintained on 2014 Dodge Challenger and Charger vehicles modified with the Scat Pack 1, Scat Pack 2 and Scat Pack 3 performance stage kits with installation at an authorized dealer.

“The Scat Pack factory stage kits can help boost 5.7-liter HEMI performance up to an additional 58 horsepower and 47 lb.-ft. of torque, allowing Dodge enthusiasts to extract the maximum performance from their vehicles without the fear and guesswork typically associated with modifying late-model vehicles,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge Brand. “And now with a warranty guarantee, they can do so with the peace of mind that their manufacturer’s warranty remains intact.”

2014 Dodge Charger R/T with Scat Package 3“The new Scat Pack kits reinforce our commitment to the performance arena,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “By maintaining the vehicle warranty, we are demonstrating to customers our confidence in the kits, which were built to exactly complement the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger by working hand-in-hand with the engineers who use factory specs to create these vehicles — exclusive knowledge available only to Mopar.”

Mopar and Dodge also revealed specifics on pricing and performance benchmarks for the trio of Scat Pack performance stage kit options. The Scat Pack 3 stage kit will provide a boost of nearly 60 horsepower and close to 50 lb.-ft. of torque — numbers currently unmatched by any OEM without the use of a forced-induction system.

The Scat Pack 1, 2 and 3 performance stage kits will be available beginning this spring with a starting U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $2,195 for the Stage 1 kit, $1,895 for the Stage 2 kit and $4,995 for the Stage 3 kit. Each Scat Pack kit includes a numbered hard badge associated with its performance stage, so enthusiasts can proudly display the emblem on their vehicle as a badge of honor.

2014 Dodge Challenger R/T with Scat Package 3The Scat Pack 1 performance stage kit for the 2014 Dodge Challenger and 2014 Dodge Charger achieves a boost of up to 18 horsepower and 18 lb.-ft. of torque through modifications including a Mopar cold-air intake to provide increased air-flow into the engine, Mopar cat-back exhaust to free up downstream airflow, and an all-new performance calibrated engine controller, optimized to the 5.7-liter HEMI® engine.

For the 5.7-liter HEMI, Scat Pack 2 adds up to a 30 horsepower bump and is geared towards the performance enthusiast looking for that competitive edge. In addition to a customized, optimized performance calibration feature tailored for Scat Pack 2, a new Mopar performance camshaft works in conjunction with the components of the Scat Pack 1 kit to take advantage of improved engine breathing and deliver an additional acceleration advantage.

Scat Pack 3 takes aim squarely at the competitive enthusiast looking for extreme performance and ultimate bragging rights. Huge gains of up to 58 horsepower and 47 lb.-ft. of torque are realized through customized, optimized performance calibration tailored for Scat Pack 3, new Mopar performance CNC-ported cylinder heads and Mopar hi-flow headers.

A Blessing in Disguise: How a broken law brought home a new Mopar https://modernmopar.com/2014/01/25/a-blessing-in-disguise-how-a-broken-law-brought-home-a-new-mopar/ https://modernmopar.com/2014/01/25/a-blessing-in-disguise-how-a-broken-law-brought-home-a-new-mopar/#respond Sat, 25 Jan 2014 15:25:14 +0000 http://www.modernmoparmagazine.com/wp/?p=3220 My mother always said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”. Now whether or not you believe in the existence of an all powerful deity, you have to admit there are always forces stronger than yourself that can steer your life into a certain direction. You know, that whole “everything happens for a reason” ideology. But I’m not here to bombard you with cliches. This is the story of how Walter Hartman, a Process Manager for Capitol One Bank in Richmond, Virginia, came to own his gorgeous 2013 Granite Crystal Metallic Dodge Charger R/T.

DSC_2545

Walter has always been a guy who rolls through cars quickly; always trading up for something bigger and faster to keep his appetite satisfied. Back in April of 2013, Walter was crusing in his daily driver, a Nissan Frontier, when a careless driver ran a red light while texting and totalled his truck. Devastated, but undaunted, Walter’s gap coverage and insurance covered everything and he was able to buy a brand new 2013 Charger R/T without any negative equity being rolled into the cost of the car. Walter knew right away that the Charger R/T was exactly the car for him, and he ventured out to bring one home. So in the end, Walter ended up with a showroom new car, with all the trimmings, for a lower monthly payment than he was paying for the Nissan. We all know texting while driving has become sort of a pandemic in our society, but thankfully no one was seriously hurt in this situation and something good came from it.

The new R/T is not Walter’s first Mopar. Walter got into the Mopar game when he purchased a 1972 Dodge Power Wagon with the intention of restoring it. He bought that truck before he even had his license but as fate would have it, the Power Wagon met its end wrapped around another car in Walter’s stepfather’s junk yard. Over the years, Walter has owned a 1990 Dodge Shadow Turbo, a 1995 Dodge Neon and a 2000 Dodge Dakota which had a vanity license plate reading ‘LOUDNLO’, of which he still has the license plate. His draw to the new Charger was actually kind of opposite of what most people say. The majority of fans jeered at a four-door version of the classic, but Walter welcomed it. He loved the concept of a four-door sedan with enough power to, as Walter puts it, “whoop most coupes out there”. We at Modern Mopar Magazine happen to agree with that theory! Walter has developed quite a love affair with the Charger. The car is no trailer queen or weekend warrior ride. He proudly takes it everywhere and shows it off.

In the short time that Walter has owned the Charger, he’s managed to do some subtle but attractive upgrades. The deep exterior color really didn’t need anything done, so that was left alone, as was the plush interior. Under the hood, Walter went old school by adding a HEMI orange engine cover and a K&N cold air intake that was also painted HEMI orange. The car is too new to need a brake upgrade yet, but Walter wanted to give them a custom touch. He installed a set of MGP brake caliper covers, had them painted to match the car and the iconic R/T logo was engraved. To keep the interior cool, and give the Charger a little more of a sinister look, Walter tinted the windows and to go one step further, had the R/T logo cut out in the rear quarter windows.

While Walter admits he usually flips cars when he gets tired of them, he tells us that there is no way he’ll be trading in his new Charger at any point in time. It’s a “keeper” in his words and he’s let us in on some of his plans. His next modification planned is going to be a cat back exhaust system, so he can give his HEMI a little more of a growl. Walter also let us know that after a few of his expenses are cut down, that he’s saving his pennies for an Edelbrock E-Force Supercharger. Now we’re talking!! Walter, the gang at Modern Mopar Magazine has one request: When the supercharger is installed to definitely keep us posted. We look forward to seeing both the smile on your face, and the bill for a new set of rear tires!

2014 Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition with 2014 Dodge Cha

When John and Horace Dodge developed America’s first mass-produced all-steel-bodied cars in 1914, the brothers set a new record for the most first-model-year automobiles ever produced (45,033 cars). One-hundred years later, the Dodge Brother’s legacy is thriving as Dodge has become America’s youngest and fastest-growing brand – powered by the performance of the legendary Charger and Challenger, the new Durango, the ultimate “no compromise SUV,” the world-class new Dart, the ever-versatile Grand Caravan, America’s best-selling minivan, and the innovation, ingenuity and efficiency of Journey and Avenger.

Now, to celebrate 100 years of Dodge performance and heritage, the brand is offering special editions of two of its most iconic vehicles. New 2014 Dodge Charger and Challenger 100th Anniversary Editions will arrive at dealerships in the first quarter of 2014 with world-class power and performance, innovative technology features and bold muscle-car styling with commemorative design details inspired by the brand’s heritage.

“The Dodge Charger and Challenger are the perfect foundation to celebrate 100 years of Dodge style and performance,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO — Dodge Brand. “Over the last century, the Dodge brand has seen its biggest success when we’ve combined head-turning designs with ingenious engineering and world-class performance. These two iconic muscle cars do all of that and more. They represent the Dodge brand’s heart and soul.”

The new 2014 Charger and Challenger 100th Anniversary Editions are loaded with unique style, technology and commemorative features. They deliver up to 31 miles per gallon (mpg) with the standard Pentastar V-6 engine and sprints to 60 miles per hour in under 6 seconds, thanks to the available legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine that produces 375 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque. They also feature world-renowned innovations like Uconnect and the segment-exclusive ZF
eight-speed automatic transmission.

Both of these limited production vehicles will share several unique visual elements, both outside and in, including exclusive availability of a new “High Octane” red pearl coat paint, all-new 20-inch aluminum wheels, commemorative badging, unique key fob and a special limited-edition owner’s kit and a commemorative book that celebrates 100 years of Dodge heritage.

Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition models
With the Charger, Dodge delivers the world’s only four-door muscle car, and the 2014 Charger 100th Anniversary Edition celebrates the brand’s centennial with uniquely designed appointments to complement the sedan’s world-class power, handling, technology and iconic style.

For a bold look, the 2014 Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Editions are available in Pitch Black, Bright White, Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Ivory Tri-Coat, Phantom Black Tri-Coat, Header Orange, and for this special occasion, all-new and exclusive High Octane Red Pearl Coat paint. With any of the colors, all-new 20 x 8-inch polished five-spoke aluminum wheels with Granite Crystal pockets and a matching Granite Crystal Dodge split-crosshair grille provide a striking look to the classic Coke-bottle shape. Stylistic appointments to commemorate the brand’s century include “Dodge Est. 1914” bar-style front-fender badges and special Dodge “100” logo on the center caps. Additional exterior appointments include a body-color rear spoiler and on models with the legendary HEMI and a red “R/T” heritage
grille badge.

Exclusive interior appointments are designed to make the 2014 Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition stand out. Dodge designers were inspired by the rich history of Dodge and sought to outfit the interior with premium attributes that reflect the patina and machinist legacy of John and Horace Dodge. All-new Molten Red or Foundry Black Nappa leather with a custom cloud overprint wraps the sport seats, center console armrest and door armrests. A unique three-spoke flat-bottom performance steering wheel features die-cast paddle shifters for added driver control. For an industrial appearance, leather-wrapped surfaces are sewn together with brass-colored accent stitching. Dark Brushed Graphite center console bezels and Liquid Graphite steering-wheel accents provide a premium look. All-new instrument panel cluster graphics feature unique black-face gauges with white indication and stand-out red “100” mph indication for this special occasion. And to play up that this is no ordinary Charger, the Electronic Vehicle Information Center and Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen feature a unique startup image, evoking the industrious nature of Detroit.

Paired with the award-winning Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen is Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology, standard on 2014 Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition models. This segment-exclusive sound experience includes 10-speakers and a 12-channel 552 watt amplifier that integrates Beats proprietary equalizer algorithm, all to create the high-definition sound quality required in professional recording studios.

For customers who demand even more power, the Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition based on the 2014 Dodge Charger R/T Plus adds the more powerful 370 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with four-cylinder mode Fuel Saver Technology and up to 25 mpg on the highway. Completing this special model are two unique key fobs, which include a 100th Anniversary Edition jeweled logo on the back side, a customized owner’s kit and a special commemorative book celebrating the 100 years of Dodge heritage.

Available in limited quantities, the 2014 Dodge Charger 100th Anniversary Edition package is available for a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $2,200 more than the SXT Plus or R/T Plus trim levels, offering tremendous value for all of the unique attributes, including 20-inch aluminum wheels, exclusive Foundry Black or Molten Red ‘cloud print’ heated Nappa leather, flat-bottom steering wheel, rear spoiler, Beats Audio, performance suspension and steering, die-cast paddle shifters and  commemorative jewelry.

The interior has all-new and exclusive Molten Red or Foundry Black heated Nappa leather sport seats featuring a custom ‘cloud overprint.’ Brass colored accent stitching and die-cast “Dodge Est. 1914” circular badges provide the 2014 Dodge Challenger 100th Anniversary Editions with an exclusive, high-end appearance that also draws inspiration from the machinist heritage of John and Horace Dodge. leather are Liquid Graphite center console bezels, steering wheel accents and door handle pulls.

Interior appointments designed to commemorate the brand’s centenary include die-cast “Dodge Est. 1914” circular badges on front seatbacks and an embroidered anniversary logo on premium floor mats. For a touch of style, new bright white gauge faces feature a surprising detail element as the “100” mph indication is marked appropriately in red. Adding even more detail is the Uconnect system’s startup image, evoking the industrious nature of Detroit. Finishing out the interior is a seven speaker Boston Acoustics audio system with 368-watt amplifier, along with Mopar “Challenger” sill plates and bright pedals.

Performance and Challenger are synonymous. The Dodge Challenger 100th Anniversary Edition based on the 2014 Dodge Challenger SXT Plus model features a 305 horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, delivering up to 27 mpg on the highway. “The Spring Festival is the perfect location to debut our new 392 Appearance Package for the Dodge Charger SRT8 to some of our most dedicated and creative performance enthusiasts on the planet,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT (Street and Racing Technology) Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “With its numerous new exterior appointments beyond our exclusive Black Vapor Chrome wheels, not only will this new 392 Appearance Package set the Charger SRT8 apart even further, it also brings another level of exclusivity to our lineup as only 392 cars will receive this special treatment during the 2013 and 2014 model years.”

The 392 Appearance Package option will cost $2,495, and customers can begin ordering in April.

Powered by the 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 engine that offers 470 horsepower (351 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. (637 N•m) of torque across a wide rpm range, performance numbers for the 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 include 0-60 mph acceleration in the high 4-second range; quarter mile in the high 12-second range; 0-100-0 mph in less than 16 seconds; top speed of 175 mph and stopping power from 60-0 mph in 120 feet.

Even with the high horsepower and torque numbers, up to 23 mpg on the highway is achieved by the use of an active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wide rpm range for efficient motoring or the use of all eight cylinders when the extra power is needed. The active valve exhaust system also allows for straight through mid and rear mufflers for a throaty exhaust note under engine load.

The 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 features an active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing to provide maximum low-end torque for strong standing starts while optimizing high-end power.

The proven five-speed automatic transmission uses standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters or the center console mounted Auto Stick, allowing for a choice of spirited shifting on both the road and the racetrack. Both methods give the driver the ability to manually select specific gears on the transmission.

New for 2013 is an improved adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system that is expanded to three modes and tuned specifically for the Dodge Charger SRT8 to provide an everyday performance ride or a much firmer race track capable damping for more challenging driving situations.

In “Auto” mode, a wide range of on-road and driver inputs – such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and longitudinal/lateral/vertical accelerations – automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions.

In “Sport” mode, the damping system rebound and compression is locked to a higher damping rate. Drivers can easily choose between settings with a press of a button on the center stack to quickly change the shock damping characteristics from “Auto” for everyday commuting to “Sport” for more spirited driving situations.

In “Track” mode, the higher damping rates combine with a performance shifting and gear holding feature that allows the driver full shift control when using the steering wheel mounted paddle controls or AutoStick.

A new for 2013, standard launch control system helps maximize straight-line acceleration.

When the vehicle is at a complete stop, the driver engages the system by pressing the ESC button twice and then with their foot securely on the brake, quickly applies full throttle. Launch control holds the engine at optimal launch rpm (1,825) and waits for the driver to release the brake. Launch control then uses engine torque management to achieve controlled wheelslip for maximum acceleration up to 62 mph (100 kph).

On the inside, the full-color graphic Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with exclusive Performance Pages includes timers for 0-60 mph, one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times, 60-0 braking distance, along with lateral and longitudinal G-forces within the touchscreen display.

The instrument panel’s 8.4-inch color touchscreen display – the segment’s largest standard display – also has all the same Performance Pages data as the EVIC, and is further expanded to include steering angle, horsepower and torque outputs along with engine gauges. The display is customizable to a driver selectable background.

Safety and security
The 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 features more than 65 advanced safety and security features, including standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and electronic stability control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features to improve overall vehicle handling and performance.

In addition, standard front-row reactive head restraints, standard full-length side-curtain air bags, driver’s knee air bag and standard front seat-mounted side-thorax air bags offer enhanced occupant protection to passengers in the event of a collision.

The available Driver Confidence Group adds Blind-spot Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Path detection and SmartBeam® headlamps.

Connectivity and infotainment
The Dodge Charger SRT8 features an available 900-watt, 19-speaker premium SRT performance audio surround-sound system from Harman Kardon. The system offers world premier innovation, featuring a 32-volt Tracking Power Supply (TPS) 12-channel Class D amplifier that delivers outstanding acoustics and brings multi-dimensional, quality sound for all interior occupants.

The system uses GreenEdge speaker and amplifier technology to offer superior sound quality and high Sound Pressure Level outputs with minimum energy consumption. GreenEdge amplifiers alone outperform traditional amplifier efficiency by up to 55 percent, representing a net efficiency of more than 90 percent in some cases. The speakers are tuned for maximum efficiency and perfectly matched to the amplifier output.

The 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 is built at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is $45,250 (plus $995 destination) for the SRT8 model and $42,250 (plus $995 destination) for the Super Bee model.
