Passion for performance continues to grow as MotorTrend Group’s “Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge” was back in full force with an extra night of high-horsepower fun and a record amount of attendees. This year, more than 47,000 enthusiasts from around the country watched and participated in street-legal racing on historic Woodward Avenue.

“When we first introduced ‘Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge’ five years ago as a pop-up car show and drag race, we never imagined it would grow to nearly 50,000 performance enthusiasts over two days,” said Tim Kuniskis, Global Head of Alfa Romeo and Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “The positive reaction from our fans and continued growth of this one-of-a-kind event fuels our passion to keep delivering products and marketing for performance enthusiasts.”

In addition to cash prizes for the race winners and fastest Dodge cars on the drag strip, the fifth annual car festival gave attendees the chance to get in the passenger seat. They were able to take an exhilarating thrill or drift ride in the 707-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and the 717-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, as well as thrill rides in the Durango SRT Pursuit “Speed Trap” concept. If that wasn’t enough, they could also race for the best quarter-mile times in the Challenger SRT Demon simulators. More than 6,800 people experienced these Dodge//SRT vehicles firsthand over the span of the two-day event.

The car festival also included a chance to check out more than 300 custom and classic cars in a Show ‘n’ Shine and watch freestyle motocross dyno, flamethrowers and wheelstander exhibitions.

“Last year’s Roadkill Nights was going to be hard to beat, but adding an extra event day this year really brought out a whole new level of turnout and excitement for car enthusiasts,” said Michael Deer, MotorTrend Group Automotive Events Senior Director. “We appreciate the support from fans in the Pontiac community and around the country who joined us to experience all the drag racing and thrill rides that Roadkill Nights had to offer.”

More than 120 street-legal cars hit the specially prepped 1/8-mile drag strip on Woodward Avenue between Rapid Street and South Boulevard to compete in high-powered drag racing for a cash purse totaling $30,000. The quickest Dodge cars in both the small and large tire categories also took home $5,000 each.

Quickest Dodge Winners

  • James Pranis, Pennsylvania: 1968 Dodge Charger (Big Tire)
  • Peter Bokedon, Michigan: 1972 Dodge Dart (Small Tire)

Big Tire Winner
Lil Jimmer Kline, Michigan: 1966 Pontiac GTO

Small Tire Winner
Alen Danial, Michigan: 1979 Chevrolet Malibu

In addition to the street-legal drag racing, celebrities, local sheriffs and NHRA racers also hit the drag strip on Woodward Avenue this weekend.

The team of Leah Pritchett and David Freiburger won the celebrity showdown challenge, with a $10,000 prize purse donated to United Way. In total, $21,210 was donated to United Way for Southeastern Michigan through the celebrity showdown challenge, charity auction and raffle tickets.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham defeated Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in the ‘Sheriff Showdown,’ an old-school grudge match on Woodward Avenue on Saturday, where they each drove a 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with respective County decals.

Leah Pritchett in her NHRA Top Fuel Dragster and Matt Hagan in his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody NHRA Funny Car wowed the crowd with exhibition runs.

On Friday and Saturday, the Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP) public booth spread awareness of the program, which is designed to develop the most highly skilled service technicians in the auto industry. Mopar CAP hosted 20 students and 20 metro-Detroit area dealers to network for dealership placement after the completion of the program. Approximately 1,000 interested prospects received information regarding the Mopar CAP program during the “Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge” event.

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014SRT (Street and Racing Technology) Motorsports teammates Kuno Wittmer and Jonathan Bomarito co-drove to a major victory in the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R in the Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday.

Closing-driver Bomarito took the lead just under an hour from the race’s end and crossed the finish line with a 10.789-second margin of victory.

The win, which came in the first major race appearance for the Dodge Viper SRT at Indianapolis, was the team’s first in the new IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and second since returning to major sports car racing in 2012.

2PRE0018Wittmer started from third on the grid and overcame a few bumps, body blows and close calls to the No. 93 in a very aggressive opening hour of the race. He pitted 45 minutes into the race from fourth place and Bomarito quickly moved into contention for the lead during a double driving stint to the finish. He moved into the lead just before the team’s final stop and great pit work by the SRT Motorsports crew kept him in first place when he returned to the track to take the checkered flag.

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014Dominik Farnbacher started alongside the No. 93 from fourth on the grid, but the No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R team wasn’t as lucky as their teammates in avoiding trouble. A Mazda Prototype side-slammed the No. 91, which knocked the right-side door loose and ultimately off of the Viper. Further blows came when Farnbacher drove upon a multiple car incident and got caught up in the melee, causing heavy damage to the right front end. The No. 91 team also had to overcome a costly 60-second stop-and-hold penalty when they were forced to enter a closed pit lane to make the door repairs.

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014Quick-thinking strategy saw the No. 91 fall only one lap down as the team called closing-driver Marc Goossens to the pits three times in quick succession for repairs during a lengthy yellow-flag period. The No. 91 ultimately needed another caution period to have a chance of getting back on the lead lap, but the closing hour of the race ran green to the end. Goossens crossed the finish line in eighth place.

The milestone Indianapolis victory continues a recent run of success for SRT Motorsports. Indy marked the third-straight race in which at least one GTLM Viper reached the victory lane podium, and they came to the Brickyard with a two-race double-podium streak that saw SRT finish second and third in the preceding races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014Wittmer also scored a one-off GT victory in a Viper GT3-R in last Sunday’s World Challenge race on the streets of Toronto.  Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen also won in the GTD class in a GT3-R at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in addition to a third-place class finish today.

The first SRT Motorsports victory came when Farnbacher and Goossens won last year at Wisconsin’s Road America, which is the next race on the 2014 IMSA TUDOR Championship schedule.

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014SRT Motorsports next races at Road America on Sunday, Aug. 10. The competition on the four-mile circuit is the eighth race of the 2014 season for the IMSA TUDOR Championship’s GTLM class. The race can be seen on FOX Sports 1 at 5:30 p.m. CDT.

SRT Motorsports Driver and Team Quotes

Jonathan Bomarito, driver, No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
How was the final 30 minutes of the race?
“It took forever. The last half hour of the race felt like a triple stint at Le Mans. It was forever. Every lap I was asking, ‘How big is the gap?’ The guys did an amazing job. The guys on the pit box made some adjustments to the Viper after our first pit stop and we made a gain. Great pit stop – that was a gain. Everything they did today was perfect. Kuno was perfect and I was able to hold onto it.”

How has this team been able to climb to the top of the podium?
“You couldn’t ask for more than that. We had a third in the Six Hour at Watkins Glen, a second at Mosport and a first in Indy and we kissed the bricks with the whole team. That momentum, those memories and that drive that those guys are going to take from this event is hopefully going to push us harder for the rest of the season.”

What was it like to win after finishing second in 2012?
“I was second in 2012 and, I have to tell you, I was pretty jealous watching those guys kiss the bricks. To come back here and to experience that first hand with the team – everybody out there, everybody that was a part of this team was out there kissing the bricks and that’s just memories that will last a lifetime for everybody. Very, very special. It’s great momentum. We have three podiums in a row. We’re second in the championship. We made up points on the leading car and hopefully that drives everybody at SRT to push even harder between now and the next race at Road America.”

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014Kuno Wittmer, driver, No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
How does it feel to win in Indianapolis?
“This is just spectacular. All the effort the team puts in during the off-season and in the season and during the short spans in the races, it’s starting to pay off. I didn’t think we could keep this momentum going, but I have faith in the team and they have faith in the drivers and we’re just becoming very lethal out there as one team. It’s not a matter of performance on track – we weren’t the quickest car on track – but it’s about our package and getting better as a team. We killed everybody on pit stops and that right there takes a lot of work. Hat’s off to the entire team. I’m so proud and overwhelmed with emotions right now. We’ve got three podiums in a row and this win is the sweetest of the bunch.”

What kind of momentum is this team carrying right now?
“If you look at the last four weeks, if you look at them all, that’s five podiums in a row and that’s a lot of success midseason. We have some tracks coming up that are good for the Viper and personally for our drivers – tracks that we’ve had a lot of success at – and I’d like to say that the championship is winding down, but it’s not at all. We have to work even harder and keep the other teams behind us.”

What did it take to get to this point?
“I think with the amount of focus that everybody has been putting into this program from the get go in 2012, everything is coming together ever so slowly and it has started to show the last three races. We’ve been scoring podiums. Can we keep this momentum going? That’s always the question. We always try to work harder, harder, harder and here we are in first. It’s the Brickyard. It’s special. You don’t get to kiss the bricks every day. It’s definitely really special. Today we got off to a good start. I noticed in the first stint I took part in, it was going to be a very aggressive and a lot of contact between competitors. It was all about being smart. It was a two hour and 45 minutes race, but a lot of competitors treated it more as a 25-minute race. We had to keep our nose clean, which we did. I turned the car over to Jonathan and he just drove a brilliant two stints. It was a team effort and, on a personal note, I’d like to dedicate this race to my unborn son, who is expected to come home in about two weeks.”

What did you think of Jonathan’s performance?
“The skill level that my teammates have is just astronomical. The last stint that Jonathan did was just mind blowing. I think I was having a seizure watching it.”

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Indianapolis 2014Dominik Farnbacher, driver, No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
How was your race?
“It was good because we finished the race despite a hard hit and we ended only a lap or two down. Most importantly, I want to say congratulations to the 93 team. They deserved the victory. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any better because two times there was contact with our car. We blew off our door with the first hit by a Mazda and then the second incident was with a prototype that spun right in front of me. There was nowhere to go and it was a very hard hit. After that, the carbon parts were cutting the tire. We had to come in and change the tire and repair the body work and, on top of that, we got a 60-second penalty for working while the pit was closed, so that was a bummer. It is what it is and the next race we’ll do better.”

Marc Goossens, driver, No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
How was your race?
“I think the car was running really good all race long. I was on a little island there being way back and not being able to get that lap back. Unfortunately, we had to do our stop, then serve a penalty and had to come back in. I understand those guys are having troubles of their own, but they shouldn’t be fighting other cars that are racing for position. Unfortunately, we got hit first with the door. We had to change the nose. Luck wasn’t on our side, but it shows what a great team we have if you see how the guys fought hard to rebuild the car and get it in shape for me to do the lap times that I was doing once the car was fixed. It shows what a great team SRT Motorsports is and I think the Dodge Viper was running strong, but you need as luck as well. Unfortunately, they had some cautions at the beginning and one more yellow is all it would have taken for us to get the lap back and then it’s a different story, but it wasn’t meant to be for us today. I’m proud to see the 93 guys get the win.”

Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of SRT Motorsports
How does it feel to win in Indianapolis?
“This is incredible and I can’t explain how proud I am of the entire team. To have SRT Motorsports and the Dodge Viper take the checkered flag at a historic venue like this, it really can’t get much better. Jonathan and Kuno did such a tremendous job today and the entire team was impressive with the pit stops, strategy and maintaining the lead. We’ve had some solid results this year, but now we are where we want to be – we’ve shown that have what it takes to put the Viper GTS-R back in the winner’s circle and we’re eager to continue riding this wave of momentum. To take the win at Indy after a pair of double-podium results is a pretty impressive three-race stretch for SRT Motorsports.”

Beth Paretta, SRT Motorsports marketing director
What does it mean to win in Indianapolis?
“We’re just over the moon. We’ve been working so hard and really just hoping that we’d have a race go our way and what better place to have it happen than at the Brickyard.”

How has this team had so much success of late?
“I think you can really see the progress that we’ve made. Today, with having some early race skirmishes, you saw our pit stops and the team was great. As we say, this class is so tight that it’s really about making the fewest mistakes and I think we’re getting better at that. The car has always been great, durable and we’re getting smarter. We’re learning. I think now the whole team is really coming together and we’re really excited.”

Gary Johnson, SRT Motorsports racing manager
What did you think of the win?
“It’s really great to have the SRT team do so well at this event. It was an immense effort by the entire team. The drivers did a beautiful job and kept the car fairly clean and ended up taking it all home at the end. It was really cool to see the whole team kneeling down and kissing the bricks. It’s great. Kuno is coming off a high from the World Challenge win in Toronto and did a great job.”

Dick Winkles, SRT Motorsports powertrain manager
What does this win mean to you?
“For me, the last time I was here was 1991 with the Viper Indy 500 pace car. Carroll Shelby was with us all month and drove it. It’s been 23 years and the Viper was very special to be there back then and now to come back here and win with the Viper in this race, it’s really cool. It’s really special.”

Are you pleased with your engine performance?
“We’re still struggling a little bit with some of the systems in the car. It’s a new car and we’re still refining it a little bit. The engines have been very durable. They’ve performed pretty well all things considered since they’re restricted so much. We’ll keep working at it and make them better yet.”

Matt Bejnarowicz, lead engineer, No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
Is it special to capture your first win with the No. 93 Viper team?
“I’m so excited it’s hard to put into words. The team worked hard and the drivers did an awesome job. This is the first win for the 93 guys and they deserve it – they’re all my heroes. What won the race for us was consistency, reliability and flawless performance. They were a lot of fast cars out there, but there was a lot of attrition and cars getting into trouble and the 93 guys managed to steer clear of most of that and the team put us in front with the last pit stop. As usual, it was a team effort needed and we managed to pull it off.”

Were you calm during the final laps?
“I was freaking out to be totally honest. I had the jitters. I shouldn’t have had that Red Bull because I didn’t need it. If I didn’t show it, I could have easily been chewing my nails off. We were fortunate and got a pretty big lead and it was pretty much ours to lose. I was pretty nervous to be honest with you. I was just trying to keep calm, keep the crew calm and keep the driver focused, but I was a mess inside for sure.”

Bill Riley, lead engineer, No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R
How does it feel to see the No. 93 Viper win?
“It was great. It’s so amazing to get the win for the 93 Viper, especially at the Brickyard – you can’t beat that. It was a good day and a great day for the 93 guys. They deserved it. They’ve had a hard time the last two years and always had some bad luck bite them, but not today.”

How do you move forward with this momentum?
“We’ve had a great two weeks with all the Vipers running and we’re just going to keep that rolling straight into Road America.”

All-new Alfa Romeo 4C Debuts at the 2014 New York Auto Show, Marks the Iconic Italian Brand’s Return to North America

Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)Marking the Italian brand’s highly anticipated return to North America, the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C makes its New York Auto Show debut – a mid-engine design inspired by the brand’s legendary racing history, state-of-the-art carbon fiber monocoque and all-aluminum turbocharged engine influenced by Formula 1, and advanced technological solutions, all to deliver supercar-level performance and driving exhilaration.

“The all-new Alfa Romeo 4C delivers supercar-level performance in its most elemental form,” said Harald Wester, President and CEO of Alfa Romeo. “With its ultra-lightweight materials and technological solutions derived directly from motorsports, a mid-engine proportion for maximum agility and purposeful styling cues to enhance performance – the all-new 4C coupe marks Alfa Romeo’s return to sports cars and the brand’s return to North America.”For the Alfa Romeo brand, the all-new 4C represents the essential sportiness embedded in the brand’s DNA: Italian style, performance and technical excellence, for maximum driving pleasure in complete safety.

Acronym 4C
The Alfa Romeo 4C is inspired by the century-old tradition of Alfa Romeo and projects the brand’s authentic values into the future: Italian style, performance and engineering excellence, offering maximum driving satisfaction in total safety. The “4C” name recalls Alfa Romeo’s great sporting tradition: the acronyms 8C and 6C in the 1930s and 1940s distinguished racing and road cars fitted with powerful eight and six cylinder engines. The 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C model’s designation continues this tradition with the latest all-aluminum 1750 cc four-cylinder engine.

Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)
A tradition of essential beauty and function
The inspiration for the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C dates back to the 1967 33 Stradale, the homologated version of the racing Type 33, which is considered one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Like the 33 Stradale that combined extreme mechanical and functional requirements with undeniable Alfa Romeo style and performance – the 4C coupe shares its body forms and follows this performance tradition with an undoubtedly Italian-styled composite body “clothing,” a state-of-the-art carbon fiber
and aluminum structure, and a high-performance turbocharged engine. With a purpose-built cockpit inspired by the legendary 1967 33 Stradale, entering the interior of the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C means entering a world derived from motorsport – only essential components for performance are integrated.

Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)Two composite-framed sport seats, thermoformed dashboard and exposed carbon fiber monocoque highlight the coupe’s technological uniqueness. Furthermore, a driver-oriented cockpit with flat-bottom performance steering wheel with paddle-shift controls and aluminum pedals speak to the brand’s racing spirit. Emphasizing the Alfa Romeo 4C’s advanced technology and focus on lightweight technical solutions is a 7-inch full-color thin-film transistor (TFT) instrument cluster that  displays simple, high-impact graphics to keep the driver focused on the road, or track ahead.
Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)
Ultra-lightweight: carbon fiber, aluminum and composites structures
To create the ultra-lightweight architecture needed for maximum performance and dynamic efficiency, Alfa Romeo 4C engineers looked to Formula 1 and only the most advanced supercars for state-of-the-art materials. The result is a monocoque made entirely of carbon fiber that delivers extraordinary stiffness and strength. Attached to the Alfa Romeo 4C’s exotic monocoque are front and rear cell structures, roof reinforcements and an engine-mounting frame made from lightweight aluminum.
Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)Alfa Romeo engineers continued the use of state-of-the-art materials by creating the bodywork entirely of SMC (Sheet Molding Compound), a low-density, high-strength composite material that is 20 percent lighter and dimensionally more rigid than steel. Providing the ability to create complex shapes while saving weight by 20 percent compared to steel are PUR-RIM (injected polyurethane) fascias and rear spoiler. Engineers even optimized the Alfa Romeo 4C’s windshield and side windows by using
10 percent thinner glass to reduce weight by up to 15 percent. Finally, two sport seats feature a carbon fiber and fiberglass reinforced-composite structure to deliver the strength and seating position needed for performance driving.

High-tech powertrain for exceptional track performance and drivability
The engine is the beating heart of any Alfa Romeo, and for the 4C, it beats to an all-new 1750 cc direct-injection 237 horsepower aluminum engine. To ensure exceptional performance and drivability on the racetrack or city streets, this new engine features cutting-edge technical solutions, including direct-injection, intercooler, dual (intake and exhaust) continuous variable-valve timing (VVT), eight counterweights, and intake and exhaust systems optimized for Alfa Romeo 4C’s mid-engine layout.

A new generation turbocharger features a pulse-converter exhaust manifold to exploit pressure waves and boost torque at low-engine speeds. A waste gate valve adjusts turbo pressure and improves the engine’s efficiency. Advanced scavenging technology enables the Alfa Romeo 4C to maximize torque at low engine speeds and deliver more response to driver input by increasing combustion efficiency and turbine speed, all while eliminating turbo lag. As a result, torque delivery is instantaneous, with a peak of 258 ft.-lb. (350 N•m); 80 percent of which is available at only 1,700 rpm.

Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)Teamed to the all-aluminum engine is a paddle-shifting Alfa TCT twin-clutch transmission, which has been specifically tuned for the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C. With its uniquely calibrated software that adjusts with the Alfa DNA selector system, the Alfa TCT’s gearshifts are designed to become most aggressive in the Dynamic and Race modes. The Alfa TCT system also integrates a “launch control” mode – delivering the utmost acceleration possible as soon as the driver releases the brake.Alfa DNA selector offers advanced technological solutions
The all-new Alfa Romeo 4C features the brand’s innovative Alfa DNA selector with “Race” mode – enabling the driver to optimize the right level of performance through four modes. With a touch of the Alfa DNA selector, the character of the Alfa Romeo 4C can be changed to (in order of increasing capability):

  • All-weather – designed to ensure maximum control under adverse weather conditions and enables gentler accelerator input and special engine and brake control logic to match road speed and prevent skidding
  • Natural – enables grand touring comfort and smooth drivability for the Alfa TCT gearbox
  • Dynamic – enables improved driving performance via a more aggressive powertrain calibration and less intrusive electronic stability control (ESC) setting
  • Race – is the most extreme performance mode, putting the driver in total control of the car under race conditions. ESC and anti-slip regulation (ASR) are deactivated to allow the driver to control traction through the accelerator pedal. The Alfa Romeo Electronic Q2 differential control system remains active for fast exits out of corners or bends
    • In Race mode, launch control can be activated, allowing the Alfa Romeo 4C to deliver supercar-level 0-to-60 mph acceleration blasts in the mid-4 second range

For driving convenience in Dynamic, Natural or All-weather modes, the Alfa Romeo TCT gearbox can utilize an “auto” mode.

Supercar performance, compact size
Thanks to Alfa Romeo 4C’s advanced technological solutions and compact size, the coupe demonstrates its precision, agility and performance credentials with a top speed of 160 miles per hour (mph), 0-to-60 mph acceleration blasts in the mid-4 second range, 1.1 g of side acceleration on corners and 1.25 g of maximum braking deceleration.

Alfa Romeo 4C (European-spec)
4C combines the best technical and manufacturing competencies of Alfa Romeo and Maserati
The very best technical and industrial expertise of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands were used to develop the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C. Teamwork between the two brands included the integration of the Alfa Romeo Style Center design with the well-known craftsmanship of the Maserati brand’s Modena production plant. In addition, the Alfa Romeo 4C was boosted by the technological contributions of Italian suppliers, who are international leaders in manufacturing high-performance components.
This is a distinguishing trait of Alfa Romeo, a brand with a century of history that continues to be one of the most famous and popular ambassadors of Italian products around the world.Limited to 500 serialized units: 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition

Many Modern Mopar readers are familiar with the innovative wheel designs of USW Forged, which has been around since the birth of the LX platform back in 2005. What many readers may not know is that last year the parent company that owned USW Forged was bought out by an overseas company which planned to dissolve USW Forged, the wheel designs, and the brand all together. Luckily a group of enthusiasts who were intimately familiar with the brand heard of this development and immediately met with the new owner to find a way to preserve the USW legacy. Shortly after their meeting these enthusiasts constructed a plan and purchased USW; thus preserving the brand and its history of providing high quality and unique wheel designs to the Mopar enthusiast community. Although the operating offices have been moved to Houston, TX, the manufacturing still takes place in Southern California. That’s right … Made in the USA!

Not only have the brand and designs been saved but now the wheels are built to even higher exacting standards and each set is DOT safety rated. Their meticulous wheel manufacturing process focuses on quality, reliability, and safety. With new blood also came new innovation; USW now offers their wheel designs in centerline, concave, deep concave, and new monoblock forged versions. Finishes include chrome, polished, powdercoated, painted, and even a carbon fiber finish. Staying true to its roots, each set of USW Forged wheels is built from aircraft-grade 6160 high quality aluminum tempered to a T6 hardness. If you are in the market for wheels be sure to check out USW Forged at www.uswforged.com or call them at 713.680.8170. Be sure to mention you are a Modern Mopar reader for a limited time 10% discount off your custom forged wheels!

You’re certainly entitled to your own opinion, but if you ask me, the most recent Super Bowl half-time show had me yawning from start to finish.

I mean, they had “The Material Girl” out there shamelessly doing her best to lip-sync to her own songs, all while surrounded by a supporting cast of at least 200 other performers, and enough lights to blind aliens on Pluto.  I felt so dissatisfied.

Organizers of the Super Bowl should have consulted with me about who to pick as their musical guest.  I know four guys who could have blown the roof off of Lucas Oil Stadium with nothing more than a drum set, two guitars, and a microphone; all while standing on a meager 10X20-foot stage.  They go by the name of Van Halen – you may have heard of them.

If you really think about it, the scenario would have been perfect: Eddie, Alex, Wolfgang, and Diamond Dave emerge from the darkness; rip through Unchained and Runnin’ With The Devil; Eddie shreds through Eruption, bringing every man who’s watching to tears; then they wrap things up with Jump as the stadium nearly collapses under the stress created by the crowd’s unbridled energy.

We wouldn’t have heard Clint Eastwood afterwards talking about “half-time in America” either.  Instead, we would have been a bullet lodged in the barrel of “Dirty” Harry Callahan’s .44 Magnum, as he stated, “Play time’s over, punks!”, blasting us out into the world to assert America’s dominance once again.  We would have instantly felt rejuvenated; ready to grab the world by the tail and put it in our pocket.  We’d all be having fun again.  The economy would spike into the black.  Even world peace would finally take hold.

Okay, the world peace part was a bit of a stretch – maybe.

You see, if Eddie and Alex Van Halen can regroup with David Lee Roth in the studio to record an entire album, all without the whole thing imploding on itself, I’d say there is hope for all of us.

A Different Kind of Truth, the group’s first new full-length recording with Roth at the helm in nearly three decades, is a soaring swell of sweet, fresh rarefied air that fills your nostrils with the rich aroma of good ol‘ rock ‘n‘ roll.  Yes, you can even smell it.

Just don’t come at this new installment with the expectation of hearing something as powerful as Van Halen 1 and 2, the iconic 1984, or their best work-to-date, Fair Warning.

That’s not to say that Truth is any less meaningful.  In fact, it could be argued that this is a pivotal point in Van Halen history.  Can these guys really recapture the magic and avoid making a throw-away comeback album that gets pandered by fans and critics alike?  The answer is unequivocally yes!  All the essential elements are still intact here.

Diamond Dave exhibits his old, jolly self, even if his voice is a little coarse at times, and those higher notes don’t come quite as easily as they once did (not that he ever had tremendous range in the first place).  At 56 years old, it’s an honest effort and you can hear Roth enjoying every single second on the mic.

During track #9, The Trouble With Never, Roth twice catechizes us listeners: “When was the last time you heard somethin’ for the first time?” and “When you turn on your stereo, does it return the favor?”  Admittedly, I was looking inward to answer both questions and it’s admittedly been quite awhile since a band made me feel the fire inside.  But quite honestly, the fire has undoubtedly returned with this new material.

Relying on several unreleased songs from the late-70‘s that have been reworked and freshened up, the new album plays right into Roth’s hands, most notably on the funked-up and sexy, She’s The Woman.  DLR throws in his signature grunts, “wooooooooo’s”, and “yeahhhhhhhhh’s,” all mixed with his tall tale, non-sensical lyrical ingenuity that has allowed his one-liners to live on for decades.  You’ll be singing right along with him in no time.

The Diamond-one gets plenty of support from Alex and Wolfgang (Eddie’s 20 year old son) as well.

Alex, now 58, is in remarkable form all the way from start to finish.  He masterfully handles everything from the album’s straight-forward, love-it-or-hate-it first single, Tattoo; to the barn burning juggernaut of, China Town, which will have you reminiscing about the first time you heard Hot For Teacher, wondering how a drummer could keep such impeccable time and force without falling apart amidst Eddie’s lightning fast chops.  He hasn’t lost a step.

Wolfgang hangs just fine with his dad and two uncles (one by birth, the other by fate).  Unfortunately, he’s gonna find it hard to escape the endless comparisons to the now-absent Michael Anthony, but that’s out of his hands.  Wolfgang isn’t out of place one bit on the entire record, and it is largely his backing vocals that allow the band to carry out the trademark Van Halen harmony that really separated them from the pack all along.

On the closing track, Beats Workin’, Wolfie closely emulates the Beatle’s, Day Tripper, as the song winds down to finish out the album; a nice touch that I would hope he came up with all by himself.  It’s the approaching 50-show tour, however, where he’ll have to be in top shape when he performs such bass-laden classics like, Runnin’ With The Devil, Beautiful Girls, and Everybody Wants Some.  Fans will expect perfection.

Nevertheless, A Different Kind Of Truth undoubtedly belongs to the man, Mr. Edward Van Halen.

The six-string virtuoso who rewrote the rules on what a guitar could and should do, plays out of his f-ing mind on all 13 tracks.  Running up and down the fret board with the ease of how you and I breathe oxygen, Eddie dazzles us with the blazing speed, finger-taps, and infectious, heavy-ass riffs that he is universally known for.  At other times, he’s bending the whammy bar and strings to such great lengths that you wonder how in the world his axe doesn’t submit under the strain.  You just can’t get this stuff no more.  It is absolutely beautiful!!!

On, As Is, Eddie’s elastic playing range is on full display as his speed and ferocity fluctuate like a cat chasing a red laser pointer.  At one point he’s at a slow creep as the song builds energy, then it’s off to races.  Roth momentarily chimes in to warn us, “This next part should really confuse things – everybody, let’s stay focused!”  Eddie then rips into a finger-tapping solo that conjures up the brilliance of Eruption, right before he cuts into a bluesy breakdown where Roth’s banter can take center-stage again.  It’s a magical give-and-take between the most celebrated rock duo of all time (Eddie and Dave, that is).

To me, this album means huge redemption for Eddie Van Halen.  The now 57 years young rock icon has endured everything from a lifelong battle with alcoholism; to cancer treatment; to several highly publicized conflicts with lead singers (Roth included); and even a bum hip.  This guy has been through Hell several times, and he’s still standing proudly, swinging for the fences with this monster display of genius guitar work.  I hope it’s as satisfying to him as it is for me to listen to it all pour off of his fingers.

The boys have simply obliterated any possible expectation I had listening to Truth for the first time.  It is a bona fide comeback effort that will sit comfortably within the Van Halen library forever; not as an eyesore, but as a sight for sore eyes.  My only question now is whether or not this is their last album?  Let’s hope not.

Dodge Dart Blends Alfa Romeo DNA and Dodge’s Passion for Performance, Resulting in a Groundbreaking Car with the Ultimate Blend of Power, Fuel Economy, Handling and Style

• The Dodge brand is back in the U.S. compact sedan segment – in a big way – as the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart will make its world debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich., on Jan. 9, 2012
• Built on a world-class architecture, Dodge Dart offers three technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and powerful engines, including the 1.4L MultiAir® Turbo
• Dodge delivers exceptional craftsmanship with class-leading technology and style

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Dec 6, 2011 – Dodge redefines performance in the compact car segment with an all-new, state-of-the-art four-door sedan delivering class-leading aerodynamics – the 2013 Dodge Dart.

With Alfa Romeo DNA and Dodge’s passion for performance at its core, the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is a thoroughly modern vehicle that’s fuel-efficient, beautifully designed and crafted, agile and brings fun back to driving in the segment.

Similar to the Dodge Dart of the late 1960s, the 2013 Dart offers a special blend of style, performance and innovation. The Dodge brand leveraged its nearly 100-year history of passion for building high-quality, innovative vehicles that stand apart in performance and style, as well as from its partner Fiat’s global compact car expertise, to develop the all-new Dodge Dart.

ALFA ROMEO DNA
The all-new Dart is the first Chrysler Group vehicle based upon a Fiat architecture – adapted from the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The Giulietta is renowned for satisfying the most demanding customers in terms of road-holding, agility and safety, with exceptional driving dynamics. The Dart leverages all of these attributes within a lengthened and widened platform delivering segment-leading levels of interior roominess.

The all-new Compact U.S. Wide (CUSW) architecture underpinning the Dart is a state-of-the-art architecture with an industry-leading 68 percent of the body composed of high-strength steel, resulting in a very strong and rigid structure. Combined with responsive steering, four-wheel independent suspension, and available 18-inch wheels, the Dart brings fun back to driving in the compact car segment.

UNMISTAKABLE STYLE
The all-new 2013 Dart marks the Dodge brand’s re-entry into the compact sedan segment, hitting the bulls-eye with a modern, unmistakable Dodge design that builds upon its performance heritage while evoking emotion, efficiency and fluidity of movement.

Eye-catching exterior proportions are set off from every angle by dynamic lines and curves, along with advanced technology, to deliver class-leading aerodynamic performance. The personality-packed front view is instantly recognizable as an all-new Dodge with its tailored split-crosshair grille, projector headlamps and fog lamps and accentuated fenders. Signature Dodge full-width LED ‘racetrack’ tail lamps and class-exclusive integrated dual exhaust – both inspired by Dodge Charger – accentuate the athletic and muscular stance of this dynamic and passionate new design.

THREE SOPHISTICATED, FUEL-EFFICIENT & POWERFUL ENGINES
The 2013 Dodge Dart will be powered by three fuel-efficient, powerful, state-of-the-art four-cylinder engines that add to Dart’s fun-to-drive quotient.

Drivers can select from a new Tigershark 16-valve 2.0-liter engine, a 16-valve 1.4-liter MultiAir Intercooled Turbo engine, and a new Tigershark 16-valve 2.4-liter MultiAir four cylinder engine. These three engines, combined with three transmission choices, combine to redefine performance by providing the most diverse powertrain lineup in its class.

MultiAir technology delivers optimum combustion at any speed under all driving conditions by allowing direct and dynamic control of air intake and combustion. The result is up to a 15 percent increase in low engine rpm torque, a 7.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 10 percent reduction in C02 emissions.

THE ALL-NEW DART – BUILT IN AMERICA
The all-new Dodge Dart will be made in America at Chrysler Group’s Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Ill. The Company is in the process of investing $600 million dollars to support the production of future products, including the 2013 Dodge Dart. The investment includes the construction of a 638,000-square-foot body shop, as well as the installation of new machinery, tooling and material handling equipment. Work on the expansion began in the summer of 2010 and will be completed this year.

The all-new Dodge Dart has been engineered with great levels of refinement, craftsmanship and engaging driving dynamics. Consumers can follow www.Dodge.com/Dart for additional photos and more information about the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart.
